HOW TO TRĕK

WHAT ARE THE TASKS?

The day will start very early with a quick breakfast and move right into the special tasks.

A written test will be the first special task. Be prepared for questions on Land Rover product knowledge, Land Rover history, competitive product knowledge, rally math, and map and compass skills.

Teams will move into their specially equipped Land Rover LR3 vehicles for the rest of the tasks, the first of which is the Land Rover Service Drive. This task will require teamwork, basic mechanical knowledge, winching techniques, vehicle familiarization and compass skills. The first team across the finish line wins.

We’ll combine off-road driving, orienteering, and rally navigation in a team event called “Authoritative Guide”. You will navigate your team vehicle using “TULIP CHARTS” and mileage readings from checkpoint to checkpoint. Time penalties will be given for not locating checkpoints and for not finishing in the correct time.

Teams will test their precision driving against the clock on an off-road autocross course. Each team member will drive one practice lap and two timed laps. Penalty seconds will be added for each cone knocked down, and the best-combined time for each team wins. The goal of a second precision driving course will be to achieve the best time on a course over difficult off-road terrain. As before, time penalties will be given for touching any flags. Speed will not guarantee a victory!

In the Regatta event, you will compete head-to-head using a kayak, canoe or raft, as another team member mountain bikes and the third competes in a foot race that will have a Land Rover twist to it. First across the finish line wins.

For the Grand Finale, two teams at a time will drive the Land Rover TRĕK ’08 off-road course. All three team members will be in the vehicle. There will be driver swaps during the competition, but teamwork will be required to get the vehicle around the course and through its obstacles. The best time through the course wins. Judges will be watching for proper driving techniques as well as safe procedures at all times. Penalties will be incurred for poor or unsafe practices.

Not all the excitement will happen at TRĕK, however. On the day of the trial, the same written test the teams take in the morning will be taken by their store. The employees and staff who are not on site at the event must correctly answer the questions on the test. Both the team at the store and the competing team on site must answer each question correctly in order to receive credit. NO CELL PHONES, NO BLACKBERRYS, NO TEXTING!

In summary, your team should be knowledgeable and comfortable with the following (all items below may be required during the special tasks, but may not necessarily be included – be sure you are familiar with them as you never know what may be thrown at you):
